Definition

A sport utility vehicle, universally abbreviated to SUV, is a tall, roomy passenger vehicle characterised by a high driving position, a raised ride height and frequently the option of all-wheel drive. The body style was conceived to combine the interior space and commanding view of a large estate or van with a degree of rough-road or poor-weather ability, and it has grown from a niche format into the dominant shape of the modern car market. Its enduring appeal rests on perceived safety, easy access and the elevated, authoritative seating position that many buyers prefer.

The height that defines the class brings several practical consequences. The raised hip point makes getting in and out easier, particularly for older occupants or those fitting child seats, and the high seating gives a clear forward view over surrounding traffic. Generous body height and a tall roofline create a spacious, airy cabin and a large, easily loaded boot. Many SUVs offer all-wheel drive, which apportions engine torque to all four wheels to improve grip on loose, wet or snowy surfaces, alongside greater ground clearance than a conventional car for clearing kerbs, ruts and mild obstacles.

It is important to distinguish the modern SUV from the traditional off-roader. The great majority of today's SUVs are crossovers, built on the same unitary, car-derived platforms as ordinary hatchbacks and saloons rather than on the separate ladder-frame chassis of a true body-on-frame off-roader. This gives them car-like ride, handling and refinement at the expense of extreme off-road durability, and many are sold purely with front-wheel drive. The genuine, rugged, off-road-focused SUV with low-range gearing and a heavy-duty chassis has become a comparatively small subset of the category.

The range within the class is enormous. At one end sit compact city SUVs little larger than a supermini, designed for urban use and efficiency; at the other lie large seven-seat family vehicles and opulent luxury flagships offering limousine levels of equipment. Performance derivatives, coupé-styled variants and increasingly electric models further broaden the field, so that the term now spans almost every price point, size and purpose.

The format does carry inherent compromises. The tall, heavy body raises the centre of gravity, which increases body lean in corners and tends to blunt handling and efficiency relative to a lower car of similar capacity, and the larger frontal area hurts aerodynamics. An estate of comparable footprint often matches or beats an SUV for usable boot volume while driving better. The SUV is therefore best understood alongside the crossover that now dominates it, the lower-slung station wagon it competes with for space, and the ground clearance that underpins its off-road pretensions.

Viktiga punkter
  • Tall body and high seating give a commanding view and easy loading
  • Often available with all-wheel drive for grip in poor conditions
  • Most modern SUVs are car-based crossovers, not body-on-frame off-roaders
  • Ranges from compact city models to seven-seat and luxury flagships
