Definicija

xDrive is BMW's brand name for the all-wheel-drive systems fitted across much of its range, designed to send drive to all four wheels while continuously adjusting how that drive is split between the front and rear axles. Rather than fixing the proportion of torque each axle receives, xDrive varies it from moment to moment according to grip, throttle, steering angle and the car's behaviour, with the aim of combining the traction of all-wheel drive with the handling character BMW is known for.

At the heart of most xDrive installations is an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch housed within the transfer case. This clutch can engage progressively to apportion torque between the propshafts feeding the front and rear differentials. A control unit monitors wheel-speed, yaw, lateral acceleration and driver inputs many times a second and commands the clutch to clamp harder or release, shifting the balance of drive wherever it will be most useful. Because the system reacts pre-emptively as well as correctively, it can move torque before a wheel has actually begun to slip.

A defining trait of xDrive is its rear-biased default. Under normal driving the system favours the rear axle, preserving the pushed-from-behind feel and the steering purity of a rear-wheel-drive BMW, and only redirects a greater share forward when conditions call for it. In extremis it can send the large majority of torque to whichever axle has grip, and in concert with the stability control it can also brake an individual spinning wheel to mimic a limited-slip effect, sharpening cornering and stability.

Within the broader market xDrive is BMW's direct counterpart to Audi's quattro and Mercedes-Benz's 4MATIC, each marque's own approach to permanent or on-demand all-wheel drive. While the engineering details differ, the shared promise is improved traction in poor weather, more confident acceleration, and greater stability, without surrendering the dynamic identity of the brand. xDrive has been offered in everything from compact saloons to large SUVs, with the torque-split strategy tuned to suit each model's intended character.

The practical benefits are most evident in rain, snow and on loose surfaces, where the variable split helps put power down cleanly and resist understeer or wheelspin. The trade-offs are familiar to all-wheel drive: added weight, a small penalty in fuel consumption, and greater mechanical complexity. On the latest cars xDrive increasingly works hand in hand with torque-vectoring functions and the electronic stability systems, so that the distribution of drive between and across the axles becomes part of an integrated effort to maximise both grip and agility.
