Definicija

The tyre speed rating is a standardised letter code, moulded into a tyre's sidewall, that certifies the maximum speed the tyre can sustain safely while carrying its rated load. It exists because a tyre is not a static object: at speed it deforms, flexes and heats with every revolution, and beyond a certain velocity that heat build-up can outpace the tyre's ability to shed it, leading to tread separation or a blowout. The rating is therefore a safety boundary established through controlled testing, not a recommendation to drive at that speed, and it forms part of the same legal type-approval framework that governs tyre construction across Europe and most other markets.

The letter appears as the final character of the service description that follows the size, so in a marking such as 205/55 R16 91V, the figure 91 is the load index and the trailing V is the speed symbol. To earn a given rating a tyre is run on a test drum at progressively higher speeds in defined increments, each held for a set period, until it reaches the target velocity without failure. The letters map to specific speeds: T corresponds to 190 km/h, H to 210 km/h, V to 240 km/h, W to 270 km/h and Y to 300 km/h, with a long ladder of lower symbols such as Q, R and S for winter and commercial tyres. The sequence is not strictly alphabetical, a quirk inherited from how the system grew over the decades.

For the owner the rating matters chiefly as a matter of compliance and capability. Vehicle manufacturers specify a minimum speed rating for each model in the handbook and on the door placard, chosen to comfortably exceed the car's top speed and to suit its weight and handling. Fitting a tyre that meets or exceeds that requirement preserves the intended safety margin, whereas a lower-rated tyre may be illegal, may invalidate insurance and will run hotter than designed. Higher-rated tyres also tend to use stiffer constructions and grippier compounds, which can sharpen steering response.

The rating is closely bound to the load index alongside it, since the certified speed is only valid at the stated load; carrying more weight effectively lowers the safe speed. Winter tyres carry their own ratings, often lower, and many countries permit fitting a reduced winter rating provided a label inside the car reminds the driver of the lower limit. Run-flat tyres and all-season tyres are rated by the same scheme. A practical caveat is that the rating assumes a tyre in good condition and correctly inflated; under-inflation, age, damage or overloading all erode the margin the letter is meant to guarantee, so the symbol describes a tested potential rather than a promise under neglect.

Ključne tačke
  • A letter for the tyre's maximum safe sustained speed
  • E.g. T=190, H=210, V=240, W=270, Y=300 km/h
  • The last character of the sidewall size code (e.g. 91V)
  • Must meet or exceed the car maker's requirement
