Definicija

Overall length is the total distance from the foremost point of a vehicle to the rearmost, measured along its longitudinal axis. In practice this means bumper to bumper, taking in any number plate plinth, tow ball cover or protruding badge that forms part of the standard body. It is the single dimension most people use to picture how big a car is, and along with width and height it defines the overall footprint a vehicle occupies on the road and in a parking space.

The figure is conventionally broken down into three parts: the wheelbase, which is the distance between the centres of the front and rear axles, plus the front overhang and the rear overhang, which are the sections of bodywork that project beyond the axles at each end. How a designer divides the length between these three has a profound effect on the car. A long wheelbase with short overhangs typically yields a roomy, stable cabin and a planted ride, whereas long overhangs can add boot space or styling drama but contribute little to interior room and can reduce approach and departure angles.

Length is also the dimension that most strongly signals a car's market class. The familiar segments, from city cars of around 3.6 metres, through superminis near 4.0 metres and family hatchbacks around 4.3 to 4.5 metres, up to executive saloons beyond 4.9 metres and full-size limousines past 5.2 metres, are defined largely by length. Buyers and journalists use these bands as shorthand for size, price and likely running costs, so a manufacturer choosing the length of a new model is in effect choosing which rivals it will be compared against.

For the owner, the practical consequences are felt mainly in interior space and manoeuvrability. A longer body usually permits a longer cabin and a larger boot, benefiting passengers and luggage. The penalty arrives in tight urban settings: a long car is harder to slot into parallel parking spaces, demands more room to turn, and may overhang the lines of a standard parking bay. It can also be heavier, which works against acceleration, braking and efficiency, although modern materials moderate this.

Length interacts closely with the other major dimensions and with the vehicle's proportions. Two cars of identical length can feel very different depending on how tall and wide they are and how their wheelbase is set within that length. Designers juggle these figures to balance kerb appeal, aerodynamics, crash structure and packaging. Understanding overall length, and particularly the split between wheelbase and overhang, gives a far more accurate sense of a car than the headline number alone, and it is best read together with overall width and overall height.
