Definicija

A crossmember is a structural beam that runs transversely across the width of a vehicle's frame or body, joining the two longitudinal sides and bracing them against one another. It exists because the long rails or sills that run front to rear along a vehicle, however strong individually, would flex and splay apart under load without something to tie them together; the crossmember supplies that tie, turning two parallel members into a stiff, integrated structure.

Mechanically its first job is to link the two sides so that loads can pass between them and the structure behaves as a unit. By bridging the rails it dramatically increases resistance to twisting, the racking and torsional motion that occurs when one wheel rides over a bump while the others do not, as well as resisting the bending and shear that road loads impose. The result is a frame or body that holds its shape, keeping suspension and steering geometry consistent and preventing the fatigue and rattles that flexing would otherwise cause.

Crossmembers frequently double as mounting points for major components. A front crossmember may carry the engine and front suspension or steering rack; a centre crossmember often supports the gearbox or transfer case; rear crossmembers anchor suspension links or the fuel tank. Locating these heavy items on a beam that spans the structure spreads their loads efficiently into both sides and helps package the running gear. Some are simple stampings or tubes welded or bolted in place, while others are elaborate fabrications shaped to clear exhausts, driveshafts and suspension travel.

The member appears in both major construction types. In a body-on-frame vehicle the crossmembers are the rungs that connect the two long rails of the ladder frame, defining much of its torsional stiffness. In a unitized body the same role is played by transverse pressings and beams welded between the floor sills, parcel-shelf area and bulkheads, which knit the shell together and create the load paths that also protect occupants in a crash.

From a service standpoint crossmembers are critical structural items. On older or off-road vehicles they are prone to corrosion where mud and salt collect, and a rusted or cracked crossmember can compromise both handling and crash integrity, sometimes rendering a vehicle unfit for the road until repaired. Because they often carry mountings, a damaged crossmember can also throw out engine or suspension alignment.

The crossmember is one of the family of structural members that define a vehicle's skeleton. It is integral to the chassis, forms the transverse rungs of the ladder frame, may be incorporated into a removable subframe that carries the powertrain or suspension, and finds a specialised relative in the composite cross-car beam that braces the cabin behind the dashboard.
