TELEAID was one of the first factory-fitted emergency telematics systems offered to the public, introduced by Mercedes-Benz in the late 1990s. The name is a contraction of 'telematic alarm identification on demand', and the system combined a mobile telephone link with satellite positioning to summon help in an emergency. It represented Mercedes-Benz's early move into connected-car safety, well before such services became commonplace or legally required.

The system worked by pairing an in-car GPS receiver with an embedded cellular module and a link to the vehicle's electronics. In the event of a serious collision, signalled by deployment of the airbags or the seatbelt pretensioners, TELEAID would automatically place a call to a manned response centre and transmit the vehicle's exact location and identity. An operator could then speak to the occupants through the car's hands-free system and dispatch the appropriate emergency services, even if those inside were unable to call themselves.

The value of such a system lies in the so-called golden hour after a crash, when prompt medical attention strongly influences survival. By removing the need for occupants, who may be injured, trapped, or unaware of their precise location, to make the call themselves, TELEAID compressed the time between impact and the arrival of help. Crucially, it sent coordinates rather than a description, so responders could find a vehicle that had left the road or come to rest in an unfamiliar area.

Beyond automatic crash notification, TELEAID provided manually triggered functions through buttons in the cabin. One summoned emergency assistance for a medical situation that had not set off the airbags, while another connected the driver to roadside assistance for breakdowns, flat tyres, or lockouts, again with the vehicle's location already known to the operator. Later versions of the service added features such as stolen-vehicle tracking and remote door unlocking, broadening it from a pure safety device into a wider concierge and security offering.

TELEAID is best understood as a forerunner of today's mandatory emergency-call systems. The European eCall regulation, which since 2018 requires automatic emergency notification on new car types, and General Motors' OnStar service pursued the same goal that TELEAID pioneered. The system sits within Mercedes-Benz's broader suite of electronic features of its era, alongside the Linguatronic voice control and Distronic adaptive cruise control, reflecting the marque's drive to integrate communications and active safety into its vehicles.
