Electric vehicle is the broad umbrella term for any road car that uses one or more electric motors for propulsion, either wholly or in part. It is defined not by how the car stores or produces its energy, but by the fact that an electric machine drives the wheels at least some of the time. This makes it a deliberately wide category, encompassing vehicles that range from a conventional petrol car with a modest battery assist all the way to a car with no engine, no fuel tank and no tailpipe at all.

In everyday conversation, however, the term has narrowed. When most people say electric vehicle or EV today, they mean a battery electric vehicle: a car powered solely by a large rechargeable battery, plugged into the mains or a charger to refill, and emitting nothing from the road. This colloquial usage is so widespread that the technically broader meaning often needs to be spelled out, which is why the industry leans on more precise sub-categories when accuracy matters.

Those sub-categories form a clear family. The battery electric vehicle (BEV) is the pure form, running only on stored electricity. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) carries both a useful battery that can be charged from the mains and a combustion engine, allowing a meaningful electric-only range backed by petrol for longer journeys. The conventional hybrid (HEV) pairs an engine with a small self-charging battery that is never plugged in. The fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) generates its own electricity on board from hydrogen. All four are correctly described as electric vehicles because an electric motor turns their wheels.

What unites this otherwise diverse group is the character of the drive itself. Wherever the electricity comes from, the electric motor delivers power smoothly, quietly and with full torque available instantly, free of the gearchanges, vibration and lag inherent in a purely mechanical drivetrain. This shared refinement, together with the high efficiency of electric propulsion, is the common thread that justifies grouping such different machines under one heading.

The distinction matters in practice because the categories differ enormously in how they are fuelled, what they cost to run, and what emissions they produce. A BEV needs charging infrastructure but produces no tailpipe emissions; a PHEV offers flexibility but only delivers its benefits if regularly charged; an HEV improves economy without any change to refuelling habits; an FCEV refuels in minutes but depends on a sparse hydrogen network. Understanding that EV is the parent term, and that BEV, PHEV, HEV and FCEV are its distinct children, is essential to making sense of the market and comparing vehicles on a like-for-like basis.
