Definisjon

A pickup truck is a vehicle that pairs an enclosed passenger cab with an open cargo bed at the rear, a configuration built expressly for hauling loads and towing. The open bed, bounded by side walls and a hinged tailgate, allows bulky, dirty or oversized items to be carried in a way no enclosed car can match, while the cab keeps occupants in car-like comfort. Most traditional pickups are constructed on a separate ladder-frame chassis, a robust arrangement of two long steel rails joined by crossmembers that gives the strength needed for heavy work and the flexibility to support many different body and bed configurations.

The mechanical priorities of a pickup follow directly from its purpose. Sturdy suspension, often with leaf springs and a live rear axle, supports high payloads, while powerful petrol or diesel engines and stout transmissions deliver the torque required to move heavy trailers. Manufacturers quote two crucial figures: payload capacity, the weight that can be carried in the bed and cab, and towing capacity, the weight that can be pulled behind, with larger models capable of towing several tonnes. Four-wheel drive is widely available, extending the pickup's usefulness onto building sites, farms and rough terrain.

For working users these capabilities are the whole point. A pickup can carry tools, materials, livestock feed or landscaping waste in its bed, tow plant or trailers between jobs, and shrug off the kind of treatment that would quickly damage an ordinary car. The separate bed also isolates the cargo from the cabin, keeping dirt, fumes and noise away from the occupants, which is valuable for tradespeople and rural users alike.

Body configurations have multiplied to suit different roles. Single-cab models maximise bed length for pure load-carrying, while extended-cab and, most popular today, double-cab or crew-cab versions seat four or five people across two rows, sacrificing some bed length for family-friendly space. This dual-purpose appeal has turned the pickup from a strictly commercial tool into a lifestyle vehicle in many markets, used for work during the week and leisure at the weekend.

Commercial-vehicle status plays a significant part in the pickup's commercial success. In some countries, double-cab pickups have qualified for favourable tax treatment compared with equivalent cars, sharply boosting their popularity among business buyers. Practically, the trade-offs include a long body that can be awkward to park, a high load lip, and a ride that, while much improved, still reflects the load-bearing suspension. The pickup sits close to the SUV in the family of body styles, sharing ladder-frame roots with the more traditional examples, but distinguishes itself through its open bed and the payload and towing capacities that define its working character.

Hovedpunkter
  • Enclosed cab plus an open cargo bed on a ladder-frame chassis
  • High payload and towing capacity for work use
  • Double-cab models seat five for dual work-and-leisure use
  • Tax breaks for commercial vehicles boost sales in some markets
