Definizione

A fastback is a body style distinguished by a single, uninterrupted line that sweeps from the top of the roof all the way down to the rear of the car, with no abrupt break or upright tail. Rather than the three-box silhouette of a conventional saloon, where the boot forms a distinct stepped volume, the fastback flows in one continuous curve, giving the car a long, low and visually fast appearance even when stationary. The name itself captures this idea of a tail that runs quickly away from the cabin.

The shape exists chiefly for two reasons: aesthetics and aerodynamics. A gently tapering rear allows airflow to remain attached to the bodywork for longer before it separates, reducing the size of the turbulent low-pressure wake that trails behind a more upright car. This can lower the aerodynamic drag coefficient, which benefits high-speed stability and, modestly, fuel economy or electric range. The visual drama of the unbroken roofline has long made the fastback a favourite for sporting models and style-led flagships alike.

It is important to distinguish the fastback profile from the method of accessing the boot, because the two are independent. Many fastbacks retain a conventional separate boot lid that opens to reveal a sealed luggage compartment, leaving the rear screen fixed. Others adopt a large rear hatch that lifts together with the glass, in which case the car is more precisely a liftback, combining the sloping look with the practicality of a wide tailgate. Modern interpretations such as the Audi A5 Sportback, BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé and many electric saloons blur these lines deliberately.

The style has a rich history, rising to prominence in the 1930s aerodynamic experiments and reaching iconic status with American muscle cars of the 1960s, the Ford Mustang fastback among the best known. It has since cycled in and out of fashion, enjoying a strong revival as designers seek to give four-door cars and electric vehicles a coupé-like elegance without fully sacrificing usability.

The principal compromise is rear headroom. Because the roofline descends towards the back, tall passengers in the rear seats can find their head close to the glass, and the high boot opening of a non-hatch fastback can restrict access to the luggage area. Buyers therefore trade a degree of outright practicality for a more rakish, dynamic silhouette. In that respect the fastback sits stylistically between the formal saloon and the two-door coupé, and shares aerodynamic and aesthetic DNA with the more practical shooting-brake.
