Two-wheel drive

Two-wheel drive, abbreviated 2WD, describes any vehicle layout in which the engine sends power to only two of its wheels rather than to all four. It is the most common drivetrain arrangement in everyday cars and serves as the umbrella term covering both front-wheel drive, where the front pair is driven, and rear-wheel drive, where the rear pair is driven. The defining characteristic is simply that one axle propels the vehicle while the other rolls freely.

The distinction between the two forms of 2WD shapes a car's behaviour considerably. Front-wheel drive places the engine, gearbox and driven wheels at the front, pulling the car along; it is space-efficient and tends to be stable and forgiving, which suits the great majority of hatchbacks and saloons. Rear-wheel drive pushes the car from behind, separating the jobs of steering and driving between the two axles, and is favoured for performance cars and many premium models because it allows better weight balance and a more neutral handling feel.

The principal appeal of two-wheel drive lies in its simplicity. With only one driven axle there is no transfer case, no second differential and no extra propshaft, so the system is lighter, less complex and cheaper to build and repair. That lower weight and reduced drivetrain friction translate into better fuel economy and lower running costs, which is why 2WD remains the default for ordinary motoring where the conditions rarely demand more.

The limitation of two-wheel drive becomes apparent the moment grip is scarce. With power going to a single axle, the vehicle has less combined traction to call upon on wet, icy, snow-covered, muddy or loose surfaces, and it is more prone to wheelspin when pulling away or climbing in poor conditions. Front-wheel-drive cars generally cope better in winter than rear-wheel-drive ones thanks to the engine's weight over the driven wheels, but neither matches the surefootedness of driving all four.

This is precisely the gap that all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive systems fill, distributing power across both axles to maximise traction at the expense of weight, complexity, cost and efficiency. The choice between 2WD and a driven-all-four system is therefore a practical compromise: most drivers, on sealed roads in temperate climates, are well served by the lighter and more economical two-wheel-drive layout, while those who regularly face snow, towing duties or rough terrain may justify the extra hardware. In code form, a two-wheel-drive car with four wheels is also written as 4x2.
