SOHC, short for single overhead camshaft, describes a valvetrain layout in which one camshaft is mounted in the cylinder head and is responsible for operating both the intake and the exhaust valves. The term distinguishes it from older pushrod arrangements, where the camshaft sits low in the engine block, and from the twin-cam layouts that place two camshafts in each head. Positioning the camshaft overhead, directly above the valves, shortens and stiffens the mechanical path between cam and valve, allowing more precise control of valve motion at higher engine speeds than a long pushrod train permits.

In operation, the single camshaft is driven from the crankshaft by a belt or chain at exactly half engine speed, and its lobes act on the valves either directly through bucket tappets or, more commonly in single-cam designs, through rocker arms. Because one shaft must reach across the head to work both rows of valves, the rocker geometry is often more elaborate than in a twin-cam engine, with the cam frequently sitting between the two valve rows and rockers fanning out to each side.

The great virtue of the SOHC layout is its simplicity. With only one camshaft per head, there are fewer moving parts, less reciprocating mass, a lighter and more compact cylinder head, and lower manufacturing cost. For a transverse engine in a small family car, where packaging space and price matter more than ultimate output, these are real advantages, and the design has powered countless mainstream vehicles reliably for decades.

The trade-offs appear when designers chase higher performance. Fitting four valves per cylinder, the configuration that breathes best at high revs, is mechanically awkward when a single cam must actuate all of them, and many SOHC engines therefore settle for two or three valves. Equally, applying independent variable valve timing to intake and exhaust is far harder when both are governed by the same shaft, since their phasing cannot be altered separately. As a result, single-cam engines tend to produce a lower specific output, that is, less power per litre, than equivalent twin-cam units.

These limitations explain why the double overhead camshaft layout has become dominant in performance and even much mainstream production, as four-valve breathing and dual independent cam timing became expected features. SOHC designs nonetheless retain a place where cost, weight and compactness are paramount, and some manufacturers have produced sophisticated single-cam four-valve heads to capture most of the breathing benefit while keeping the simpler architecture. The choice between SOHC and DOHC is ultimately one of priorities rather than of one being inherently superior.
