Ground clearance is the vertical distance between the lowest fixed point of a vehicle's underside and the surface of the road beneath it. It is one of the most telling dimensions for judging where a car can and cannot go, because it defines how large an obstacle the vehicle can pass over without its underbody making contact. The measurement is normally taken at the lowest component, which might be a crossmember, the sump guard, the exhaust or a differential, and is quoted with the car unladen unless otherwise stated, since adding passengers and cargo compresses the suspension and reduces the figure.

The practical value of clearance lies in what it lets a vehicle clear. A generous gap allows a car to ride over high kerbs, deep ruts, rough farm tracks, packed snow, speed humps and the crest of steep driveways without grounding out and damaging fragile components such as the sump, fuel tank or exhaust. Off-road vehicles are deliberately built tall for exactly this reason, whereas low sports cars sacrifice clearance in pursuit of other goals and must be driven carefully over the same hazards.

That height comes at a cost, however, because raising the body to gain clearance lifts the centre of gravity. A taller vehicle leans more in corners, transfers more weight laterally and is inherently more prone to body roll and, in extreme cases, rollover. This is the central compromise of vehicle geometry: clearance buys off-road and rough-surface ability but works against the flat, planted handling that comes from keeping mass close to the ground. Designers tune suspension and fit electronic stability control to claw back some composure, yet the underlying trade-off remains.

Ground clearance also works hand in hand with three related angles that describe a vehicle's off-road geometry. The approach angle governs how steep a slope the front can climb into without the bumper digging in, the departure angle does the same for the rear, and the breakover angle determines whether the belly will catch on a crest. A car can have ample clearance yet still ground on a sharp ridge if its wheelbase is long and its breakover angle shallow, so clearance alone never tells the whole story.

Some vehicles add flexibility through adjustable air suspension, which can raise the body for rough terrain or low-speed obstacles and lower it at motorway speed to cut drag and improve stability. Owners should remember that the quoted figure assumes a lightly loaded car on level ground; heavy loads, worn springs and aftermarket lowering all change it. Checking actual clearance before tackling unfamiliar tracks, flooded fords or awkward ramps is the surest way to avoid an expensive scrape against the underbody.
