Insta-Trac is a proprietary four-wheel-drive system developed by General Motors and fitted to a range of its trucks and sport utility vehicles. Its purpose was to make part-time four-wheel drive far more convenient by letting the driver engage and disengage four-wheel-drive high range while the vehicle is moving, rather than having to stop, climb out, and lock the front hubs by hand. Marketed under the "shift-on-the-fly" banner, it addressed a long-standing inconvenience of traditional part-time systems and made occasional four-wheel drive much more practical for everyday use.

In a conventional part-time set-up the front wheels are only driven when the transfer case is engaged, and the front hubs or axle shafts must be coupled to the wheels for that drive to reach the road. Older designs required manually locking hubs and a transfer case that could only be shifted with the vehicle stationary. Insta-Trac instead uses a synchroniser arrangement and a vacuum-actuated front axle disconnect so that the rotating speeds can be matched and the front driveline coupled cleanly while the vehicle is in motion, typically at moderate road speeds.

The practical effect is that a driver who encounters snow, mud, or a slippery surface can move from two-wheel drive into four-wheel-drive high simply by selecting it, without any pause in progress. This is genuinely useful when conditions change intermittently along a journey, since the system can be engaged the moment grip is lost and disengaged again on returning to clear tarmac, where running in four-wheel drive on a high-traction surface would otherwise cause driveline wind-up and increased wear and fuel use.

There is an important limitation. The convenience of shifting on the move applies only to the high range. Selecting low range, which multiplies torque for steep ascents, heavy loads, or crawling over obstacles, still requires the vehicle to be stopped, usually with the transmission in neutral, before the lower gearset in the transfer case can be engaged. This is a normal characteristic of such transfer cases rather than a fault, because the low-range gears cannot be meshed safely while spinning at speed.

Insta-Trac sits firmly within the part-time four-wheel-drive family, distinct from full-time or permanent systems that drive all four wheels continuously through a centre differential. It is best understood as a refinement of part-time drive that improved usability while retaining the underlying simplicity and the need for low range to be engaged at a standstill, depending as it does on the transfer case and front axle disconnect to route drive to all four wheels on demand.
