A winch is a motor-driven drum-and-cable mechanism, typically mounted at the front of an off-road vehicle, used to haul the vehicle itself or another out of a situation where its own traction is insufficient. It is a cornerstone of serious recovery equipment because it allows a stranded vehicle to be pulled clear of mud, sand, deep ruts or steep obstacles using mechanical force rather than relying on the wheels to claw their way out.

The core of a winch is an electric or, less commonly, hydraulic motor driving a drum through a heavily reduced gear train. The high gear reduction multiplies the modest output of the motor into the very large pulling forces required, with capacities typically rated from around 4,000 lb to over 12,000 lb for heavier four-by-fours. Wound onto the drum is the line, traditionally a galvanised or stainless steel cable but increasingly a synthetic rope made from materials such as Dyneema, which is lighter, easier to handle and safer if it fails. The line passes through a fairlead at the front of the vehicle and ends in a hook.

In use, the line is paid out and attached to a secure anchor point, after which the motor spools it back in, drawing the vehicle towards the anchor. The crucial advantage over a tow rope is that a winch enables self-recovery: with a suitable anchor, such as a sturdy tree protected by a strap, a buried ground anchor or even a spare wheel, a lone driver can extract the vehicle without a second one present. A snatch block can be added to double the effective pulling force or to redirect the line around an obstacle.

Winches are most commonly seen on expedition-prepared and competition off-road vehicles, often integrated into a reinforced front bumper, but they are equally part of agricultural, military and emergency-recovery fleets. Some are portable units that mount to a receiver hitch and can be moved between vehicles.

The forces involved make safe technique essential. A line under high tension stores considerable energy, and a sudden failure of cable, hook or anchor can whip the line back with lethal speed. Operators are taught to lay a heavy damper blanket over the line to absorb that energy, to keep bystanders well clear of the line's path, to wear gloves and never to step over a loaded cable. Steel cable also develops sharp broken strands and kinks with use, demanding regular inspection.

The winch belongs to the wider world of recovery and off-road hardware. It complements the recovery strap, which uses a second vehicle's momentum instead of a motor, and works alongside protective items such as the skidplate, within the context of four-wheel-drive systems and the chassis attributes, like axle articulation, that determine how readily a vehicle becomes stuck in the first place.
