Definice

An all-terrain vehicle is a small, lightweight machine designed to travel over ground that would defeat an ordinary car — mud, sand, loose gravel, grass and rutted trails. It exists to combine the manoeuvrability of a motorcycle with the stability and traction needed off the beaten track, giving farmers, foresters, hunters and recreational riders a compact tool for crossing rough or boggy terrain where larger vehicles cannot follow or would do too much damage.

Its defining feature is a set of large, balloon-like tyres run at very low pressure, often only a few pounds per square inch. The soft, wide tyres spread the vehicle's weight over a large contact patch, so it floats over soft ground rather than sinking in, and they deform around obstacles to maintain grip. The rider sits astride a saddle-style seat and steers with motorcycle-type handlebars rather than a wheel, a layout shared with the quad bike to which the ATV is closely related. Most have four wheels, a small petrol engine — though electric models now exist — and a chain or shaft final drive, with the rider shifting their body weight to help control the machine through corners and over uneven surfaces.

What makes the ATV valuable is the way this configuration matches its task. The low centre of gravity, short wheelbase and generous ground clearance let it climb banks, ford shallow streams and pick through obstacles, while the handlebar controls give direct, immediate steering response. On a farm it can tow small trailers, carry tools and reach distant fields quickly; on a trail it offers an agile, open riding experience.

There are several variants. Single-rider sport ATVs are tuned for agility and speed, utility models prioritise torque, towing capacity and load racks for work, and youth machines are sized and speed-limited for younger riders. A close cousin is the side-by-side or UTV, which seats occupants abreast in a roll-cage with a steering wheel and is often confused with the ATV but is a distinct category.

The practical limitations are significant. Because the rider is unenclosed and the vehicle is tall and narrow relative to its track, ATVs have a real risk of rollover, particularly on slopes or during sharp turns, and protective clothing and a helmet are strongly advised. They are generally not type-approved as road-legal passenger cars and in many jurisdictions may not be driven on public highways. Carrying a passenger on a machine built for one rider, or letting children use adult-sized models, raises the danger further, and many regions impose age and training requirements.

Within the broader vocabulary of off-road motoring, the ATV relates to concepts such as four-wheel drive and ground clearance, sharing their emphasis on traction and obstacle-clearing ability, but it remains a specialised utility and recreational vehicle rather than a substitute for a conventional car.
